Provide Vaccinations to Children

Location: Ban Nong Luang Village, Mae Ramard District, Tak Province, Thailand

Beneficiaries: 66 children, ages three months to six years old

Background: Mae Ramard District is located in the high mountains of northwest Thailand, where the weather is very hot in summer, very cold in winter, and very windy during the rainy season. Because of this, many children suffer from colds, pneumonia, lung inflammation, asthma, and respiratory disease. Because of their poor living conditions and a lack of quality food, the children have low immunity and so get sick more easily. When they get sick, the distance from the village to see a doctor is long and difficult. Their parents depend on a hired public car to pick them up, if they can even afford it. If they have a motorcycle or borrow one, they have to pay for gasoline. If parents treat their children at home, it will consist usually of an herbal drink. Health care clinics will provide vaccines to the elderly and children in high risk groups, but for everyone else, the cost is $75 per injection, on top of other fees associated with going to the clinic and receiving vaccines.

Specific Objectives

  • Provide vaccination treatments for young children to prevent disease and death

  • Alleviate the costs associated with getting to the health clinic to receive vaccines
