140 Years of Success at Chongshi Girls’ School

Chongshi

2024 marks the 140th anniversary of Chongshi Girls’ School in China, a legacy Pearl S. Buck International supports thanks to the generosity of child sponsors.

Having made it successfully through the pandemic, the daily lives of the students at the school returned to normal with the implementation of programs and projects to help graduates of the school inherit and pass on the spirit of Pearl S. Buck.

Activities the girls participated in included a visit to the Pearl S. Buck Museum and a lecture on “Pearl S. Buck and her Chinese Hometown of Zhenjiang.” Many of the students participated in an oral English contest as well as took part in the newly formed Pearl S. Buck Reading Club. While study abroad opportunities continue to be suspended, the girls engaged in online activities with their sister school La Salle, in Girona, Spain, Hong Kong Diocesan Girls’ School, and Taipei Wesley Girls’ High School. The school hopes to offer study exchange opportunities to its students again in the near future.

The sponsored seniors held a party before they graduated, in which they shared their experiences at the school and thanked Pearl S. Buck International and their sponsors. Each of the students made a short video and wrote emails to Chongshi and PSBI to show their sincere gratitude.

The priority of all the projects and programs implemented this past year was to provide good opportunities for all the students to overcome their difficulties, comprehensively develop skills, and help each of them have a better life in the future. Plans to continue supporting the students at Chongshi include exploring new ways to help the girls find more chances to enter colleges and universities abroad upon graduation.
