Helping Children in Kenya
Pearl S. Buck International continues to partner with Bethlehem Baptist Church and Chariots for Hope to provide humanitarian aid to children living at Ogada Children’s Home in Kenya through child sponsorship and project funding.
Education
The children continued to do well in their studies this past year, including a sponsored child named Eunice, who received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from the university. In addition to their regular schooling, the children participated in sex education and learned about the negative effects of drug use, and the girls learned about how to properly use feminine products. All the children were instructed on how to begin thinking about vocational training for the future, how to identify their talents and passions, and how to apply those to career choices and start working on them.
Needs of the Children
At Christmastime, the children’s home had a celebration featuring games and a meal everyone shared together. Every child received a Christmas outfit and a package containing maize, cooking oil, sugar, and wheat flour to take home to their families. Ogada’s sustainable projects, which include gardens and chickens, continue to do well despite Kenya experiencing the worst drought in 40 years. Thankfully, Ogada has not been greatly affected by the drought and famine, except that food and supply costs
have risen significantly since the pandemic.
While the support of child sponsors and project donors continues to assist the children in attending school, receiving proper and timely medical care, and having enough nutritious food to eat, the children are still in need of mattresses and bedding, new windows for their dorms, and new mosquito nets. In addition, solar lights will improve safety at the children’s home, and more laundry facilities will help keep the children healthy and clean.
