School Field Trips to the Pearl S. Buck House Grades 1 Through 3

Field Trip Offerings for Grades 1–3

Urban/Rural Theme

Pearl S. Buck lived in two types of residential communities as a child in China and as an adult in the United States She would experience daily life in an urban (city) setting and in a rural (country) setting. This themed field trip will enhance the student’s awareness of the differences of these two environments and introduce art concepts. 

Program Components

 

Pearl S. Buck House Tour

A docent-guided tour will emphasize the urban aspectof the historical Pearl S. Buck home as well as the very distinctive farm structures associated with the house and surrounding buildings.

Urban/Rural Activity

A split scene black and white worksheet will be provided with a bag of mixed up urban or rural associated stickers. Aside from coloring in the two different scenes, the students will be asked to place the matching stickers onto the appropriate settings scenes. A brief discussion will follow up with them explaining the differences. 

Puzzle Art

Students will be provided a trifold worksheet with 3 empty boxes entitled painting, house décor, and sculpture. Individual puzzles bags will be provided which the students need to be reassembleand then glued onto the appropriate titled box Time permitting crate size boxes of the sculptures on the grounds present a hand- on- challenge to be reassembled into life size 3D samples of those sculptures.  

Puppet Show

Pearl S. Buck wrote many children’s stories. Students will be presented a puppet show adapted from to one of her stories.
