Japan-Themed Tour

Pearl S. Buck spent some time in Japan and had a deep appreciation for the history and culture of the Japanese. This tour uses her novel The Big Wave as the centralized theme for the tour and activities. 

Pearl S. Buck House Tour

This docent-led tour points out Japanese artifacts in the art and home décor. 

 

Ring of Fire

  • Geographic understanding of where Japan is in the world, its island structure and precarious position 
  • What is a Tsunami – students participate in creating a tsunami and develop an understanding of the impact on the community. 
  • Tsunami safety around the world
  • How earthquakes can cause a tsunami  
  • This STEM activity involves water, deductive reasoning, and life skill safety issues

 

 Interpretation of Hokusai art

Students create artwork resembling the “The Great Wave” created by Katsushika Hokusai 

Additional Activities

  • How to write a haiku - An ELA activity on creative writing 
  • Origami - demonstration and creation
Each component of this tour is scheduled with an escort to each activity to complete an interesting, varied day. An activity booklet about Japan is given as a departing gift.
