Student-Created Rain Poetry Art Installation Unveiled at Pearl S. Buck International

Blue skies and sunshine were the backdrop for the September 12 unveiling of the Rain Poetry art installation on the grounds of Pearl S. Buck International in Hilltown, PA. Over the summer, local students between the ages of 8-13 participated in this program funded by a grant from PA Humanities and in partnership with Bucks County Library-Doylestown. The students wrote their own haikus and drew accompanying artwork. Their works were then turned into stencils and applied to one of the walkways on the Pearl S. Buck International campus, invisible until water is poured on it. At Saturday’s reveal event, the children used watering cans to “magically” unveil their artwork for the first time.

In addition to the students and their families, volunteers who worked on the Rain Poetry project with them and staff from Pearl S. Buck International were in attendance. PA Humanities Executive Director Laurie Zierer and Education Program Manager Julia Katz as well as Pennsylvania State Representative Shelby Labs and Pearl S. Buck International Board Chair Tony Luna also came out to support the students and the Rain Poetry program.

Visitors to Pearl S. Buck International, the Pearl S. Buck House, and Green Hills Farm Arboretum here will be able to see the Rain Poetry art installation over the next three months; they will just need to stop at the tour desk for a watering can and follow the signs to find and “magically” reveal it for themselves!
