Mission

The Green Hills Farm Arboretum, a preserved open space, provides opportunities for the community to explore the power and beauty of nature through education. The arboretum enhances this mission by offering a living landscape where history and environment intersect—encouraging reflection, education, wellness, and community engagement.

Historical Background

Originally purchased by Pearl S. Buck in 1934, and a farm property since 1714, Green Hills Farm served as her residence for over 40 years. During this time, she wrote many of her important works and pursued humanitarian efforts that would later shape the mission of Pearl S. Buck International. After her death, the property was preserved as a museum and cultural site. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1980.

Educational and Cultural Use

The arboretum and surrounding estate are actively used for:

  • School programs and field trips aligned with Pennsylvania standards
  • Self-guided and guided tours focusing on history, agriculture, and environment
  • Cross-cultural events, workshops, and community programming

The Arboretum and Landscape

The arboretum is part of the estate’s expansive grounds, which were made a preserved open space in 2009 by Bucks County. The grounds feature:

  • Manicured gardens and natural landscapes
  • Open lawns, wooded areas, and ponds
  • Wildlife
  • 55 varieties of trees

The grounds reflect both the working farm environment of Buck’s time and her appreciation for nature and gardening. Today, they serve as a peaceful setting for visitors to explore plant life, seasonal beauty, and outdoor wellness.
