Access to Diapers Life-Changing for Children Living in Vietnam Orphanage
Pearl S. Buck International Vietnam (PSBIV) works with children living in seven orphanages there, implementing many useful projects and activities to support the emotional, health, and nutrition needs. One of the most successful projects PSBIV has been able to carry out thanks to the generosity of donors and sponsors is providing diapers to children with disabilities living in Thuy An Orphanage.
The children being raised in Thuy An Orphanage are all disabled, many with serious health problems. At present, there are 170 children with disabilities in the orphanage. These children face many difficulties because many of them cannot move, eat or go to the toilet by themselves. They mostly lie or sit in one place and totally depend on the housemothers, from feeding and eating to sleeping and moving around.
In addition to their disabilities, the overall health of the children is very weak, and they easily get infected with many contagious diseases. The children also live with mental and emotional issues, which cause many challenges for the housemothers and caregivers.
One of the outstanding difficulties in taking care of these children is how to ensure their personal hygiene, especially in the wet and rainy season when clothes and bedding take a long time to dry. In addition, the government allotment of diapers per child is minimal, leading to many of the children spending all day in a wet and dirty diaper. If the childcare is not hygienic, the children get contagious diseases, skin irritation, fungal infections, and even hypothermia. Ensuring these children have access to enough clean diapers to get them through each day and night is vital to their health and the housemothers’ ability to care for them properly.
Understanding the importance of access to diapers to the well-being of the children, PSBIV has provided 4,000 diapers and 1,560 diaper changing pad covers to Thuy An Orphanage. In addition to helping to improve the overall health of the children and the ease ofcaring for them, clean diapers enable the children to have a good night’s sleep, develop well, and feel comfortable in their daily activities.
Thanks to the endless love and generous support of PSBIV sponsors and donors, the children at Thuy An have a clean living environment and good care. In fact, many of the children have shown great progress, from their physical health to cognition ability. Thanks to the aid of sponsors and donors, PSBIV is able to successfully support all the orphanages with basic necessities.
The principal aim of PSBIV is to implement helpful and meaningful projects and programs to benefit the disadvantaged Vietnamese children so they have favorable conditions to develop well, have good education opportunities, and have a better future life. This will help them live free of poverty, illiteracy, psychological or any physical damage.
The staff of PSBIV and all the children served by them express their sincere thanks, gratitude, and appreciation to all the donors and sponsors. With their significant support, PSBIV believes that all the children living in the seven orphanages have a promising future ahead of them.
